New Jail Annex Named In Honor of Sheriff Yeager

Post Date:01/07/2026 4:54 PM

The Coweta County Board of Commissioners proclaimed during their January 6, 2026 meeting that the new Coweta County Jail Annex (C-Pod) be named “The Sheriff Michael S. Yeager Wing” in recognition of Sheriff Yeager’s extraordinary leadership and decades of service to Coweta County.

“Sheriff Yeager did so much for the citizens of Coweta County for decades and led this Sheriff’s Office with real pride” shares Sheriff Lenn Wood, who recommended that the Board name the C-Pod in honor of Sheriff Yeager. “It truly is an honor to name this Jail Annex after him, a lasting tribute to a man who means so much to us.”

Born and raised in Coweta County, Sheriff Michael S. Yeager began his law enforcement career in 1980 with the Newnan Police Department. He went on to work in the Probation Division of the Georgia Department of Corrections before joining the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office in 1987. He worked as a Captain in the Criminal Investigations Unit before being elected as the Sheriff in 1992, a position he held for 25 years. He was then nominated by President Donald J. Trump and confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Georgia from 2019-2022. Throughout his extensive career, Sheriff Yeager also held various leadership positions in organizations such as the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association, the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council and the Constitutional Officers Association of Georgia.

“On behalf of the Board of Commissioners, we are proud to name the new Jail Annex after Sheriff Yeager,” shares Chairman Bill McKenzie. “Sheriff Yeager embodies honor, service and integrity and we are thrilled that his longstanding work history in Coweta County will carry on for future employees as they work in the new Jail Annex.”

“I greatly appreciate this honor, it is very humbling,” shared Sheriff Michael Yeager during the presentation at the Board meeting. “I spent more than 31 years on Greison Trail. It wasn’t just a job; it was something I thoroughly enjoyed. There is a quote I always hold close to me: ‘Leadership is not about being the best, it is about making everyone else better,’ and I hope that’s what I did. Thank to you the Board for this recognition, the citizens who supported me all those years, the men and women at the Sheriff’s Office who held with me, and most importantly, my family who have always been my biggest supporters.”

The new Coweta County Jail Annex (C-Pod) was completed in 2024. The 54,000-square feet facility boasts a range of upgraded resources, including an infirmary, kitchen, laundry area and four dayrooms/pods. In addition, there is an on-campus Courthouse, Patrol Office expansion, additional parking and onsite road improvements. This was the first major expansion project at the Coweta County Jail in approximately 30 years – a much-needed project given the County’s growth and ongoing overpopulation at the Jail.
