Internal Promotions & Org Changes
Coweta County is excited to announce the following internal promotions and organizational changes effective immediately.
Jon Amason
After serving as the Director of Community Development for the last seven (7) years, Jon Amason is returning to his engineering roots and will serve as the new Division Director of Engineering in Public Works.
Jon originally joined Coweta County in 2008 as the Engineering Assistant in the Development and Engineering Department, working his way up to the ranks to become a Staff Engineer and Senior Engineer. He was responsible for reviewing development plans, assisting with project inspections and helping design various county projects including fire stations, LeRoy Johnson Park, just to name a few. Jon was then recommended by leadership to serve as the Director of Community Development, transitioning from the engineering side of development to the planning side.
During his tenure with Community Development, Jon led the team through reorganization, combining several divisions under one roof to become what is now known as Community Development – consisting of Development Review, Planning and Zoning, Comprehensive Planning, Code Enforcement and Business/Alcohol Licensing, along with contracting out building plan review to SAFEbuilt. He supported staff on several ordinance amendments and developments, including easement amendments, Land Development Guidance System, Solar Farm Ordinance and currently the Data Center Ordinance amendment.
Prior to joining Coweta County, Jon worked for a design consult in Birmingham, AL and then local government in his hometown in Clay County, AL, designing bridge and construction plans and project management for various public infrastructure projects. He began working in the Newnan area in the mid-2000s, helping to design various residential subdivision and commercial retail projects. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Alabama.
“I’m excited to return to my engineering roots but am very grateful for my time with Community Development,” Jon shares. “It is one of the hardest working teams in the county who work tirelessly to provide exceptional customer service to our community.”
In his new role, Jon will focus on management of public infrastructure improvement projects and also provide engineering review of private development projects.
Jon has been married to his wife Sharon for 22-years and has two teenage daughters: Alli (17) and Megan (15), along with his stepson Blake (30). He enjoys spending time with his family, hunting and fishing.
Ben Sewell
Following Jon’s transition back to Public Works, Ben Sewell was promoted to serve as the new Director of Community Development.
Ben is a long tenure employee of Coweta County, joining the team as a Development Review Technician in April 2001. He helped to review development plans for compliance and code before being promoted within the department to oversee Development Review. During his tenure, Ben helped establish the Land Development Guidance System for Coweta County and has assisted on several projects and ordinances during his time.
Born and raised in Coweta County with family dating back to the early 1800s, Ben has always been passionate about land use development. During college, he originally planned on becoming a land surveyor before becoming interested in development. He’s passionate about ensuring quality development in the county. Ben received his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and Agriculture from the University of Georgia.
“This is a lifelong goal to be the Director of Community Development,” shares Ben. “I look forward to helping our employees foster an environment of quality development and making the county a better place. I am dedicated to positively impacting the community I was born and raised in.”
Ben is married to his wife Robin of 13-years and has two daughters, Odessa (8) and Anna (5). He lives in Coweta County and enjoys outdoor adventures, agriculture and maps.
Teresa Crow
As Ben transitions into his new role, longtime Coweta County employee Teresa Crow will now serve as the Assistant Director of Community Development.
Teresa has been with Coweta County for 20-years, starting as a Development Review Associate and working her way up the ranks to serve as the Development & Planning Manager most recently. Over the last year, Teresa has spearheaded the 2026-2046 Comprehensive Plan update, working with community ambassadors and the steering committee to explore new tools for rural preservation. During her tenure, she also played a pivotal role in establishing the Land Development Guidance System.
Prior to joining Coweta County, Teresa worked in planning and development for Clayton County for 14 years. She has always been interested in planning and development and enjoys having the ability to make a positive change in a community.
“I am incredibly humbled to be the new Assistant Director of Community Development,” shares Teresa. “I am eager to see how I can help contribute in new ways. We have an incredibly hardworking group of public servants who are genuinely interested in helping the public.”
Teresa has been married to her husband for 28-years and has two adult children and six grandchildren. She enjoys camping in the family’s RV, e-biking, paddle boarding and exploring new places to visit, most recently camping at the Gulf State Park near the coast of Alabama.
“We are incredibly proud of Jon, Ben and Teresa and look forward to their continued success with Coweta County,” shares Administrator Michael Fouts. “We are fortunate to have over 1,200 public servants who are dedicated to serving our community.”
