What Is An EMERGENCY?
An emergency, by our definition, is any occurrence that requires the IMMEDIATE dispatch of Fire, Law Enforcement or Emergency Medical Services.
For example, if you come home from a two week vacation and find that your home has been burglarized, that, by our definition, WOULD NOT be an emergency. If you come home from work and find that your home has been burglarized since you left that morning, that WOULD be an emergency.
Our creed at 911 is: "When in doubt, send them out!" So if you don't know whether the situation at hand is an emergency, CALL US!!!
What If I Can't Speak?
If you have an emergency, but cannot speak because of a medical problem or someone threatening you, dial 911 and when they answer, either tap on the mouthpiece of the phone or push some of the number keys on your phone. This will alert 911 that you are unable to speak and they will begin to ask questions and tell you to tap once for yes and twice for no. If you are calling from a wireline (as opposed to a cellular) phone, 911 will have a location and send help.
History
The Coweta County Board of Commissioners, in 1988, put the question of having a 911 system before the voters in a referendum. The response in favor was overwhelming and work began in late 1988 to develop and implement the system. Responsibility for implementation was placed in the Emergency Management Agency. After many months of hard work, the system "went live" on May 10, 1990 with the first call being placed at 9:11 A.M. by then County Commission Chairman, Jimmy Davis.
Call volume has been on the increase ever since that first day and the center now tops 120,000 calls per year.
Personnel
Working in the 911 Center requires a great deal of training. New employees must attend a two week orientation and training session. Once this is completed, they embark on a six month on-the-job training program under the direction of a training officer. During the first six months of employment, they are also required to complete the State Mandate Training Program at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, Ga. They also must complete training and certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher and a Terminal Operator on the Georgia Crime Information Computer System. All employees are required to complete at least forty hours of continuing education in the emergency communications field per year.
