VEHICLE REGISTRATION (TAGS)

Your registration period is 30 days prior to and including your birthday. You should receive a prebill registration form 30 to 45 days prior to your birthday. Penalties (as required by state law) apply if registration takes place after your birthday.

REMEMBER: The registration period is not the entire month of your birthday, only 30-days prior to and including your birthday!

If the vehicle is registered in two names, the first person on the registration determines the renewal period.  Businesses register depending on the first letter of the company name.  For example: A & B - January, C & D - February, E & F - March, etc.

Individuals or businesses who do not receive a tag prebill within two weeks of their expiration date should contact the Tag Office. The Tag Office cannot guarantee a prebill will be received in the mail.

Payment options include Visa, Mastercard and American Express with a 2.5% administration fee and debit cards with a $1.50 fee per transaction.

Register Online or by phone at 877-496-0249

INSURANCE REQUIRED

Georgia Liability Insurance is required in order to register your vehicle. The vehicle must be covered by liability insurance at all times or a lapse in coverage penalty will apply. (If you cancel your insurance, you must also cancel your registration.)Vehicle owners may now access the Department of Motor Vehicle Safety's Web Site to verify insurance coverage in the state's motor vehicle database.

"Valid Insurance Coverage" must be shown in the state's database before a vehicle can be registered.  If you cancel your insurance you must also cancel your registration.

IT IS THE OWNER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO INSURE HIS OR HER VEHICLE IS PROPERLY REGISTERED.

BUYING OR SELLING A VEHICLE

Sell or Trade In -- Take the tag off the vehicle you are selling or trading. Under current law, the tag stays with the person and may be transferred to another vehicle of the same class within 30 days. A copy of the last registration needs to stay with the vehicle you are selling or trading.

Buying (Used Vehicles) -- Be sure to obtain a copy of the last registration on the vehicle. This will verify taxes have been paid on the vehicle.

Tag Transfers -- A tag may be transferred to another vehicle as long as the transferee is the same person. This must be the the first person's name shown on the registration (if joint ownership).

EMISSIONS

In 2010, annual emissions testing is required for 1986-2007 year models. (2008 and newer models are exempt from testing in 2010.) The test is valid for one year from date of the test and is good for one renewal only.

Senior Citizens may receive an emission waiver if they are at least age 65, the vehicle is at least 10-years old and the mileage driven is less than 5,000 miles per year. The inspection waiver, because of the mileage restriction, must be applied for every year. Remember, this applies to mailed-in tag applications as well as those applied for in person.

There is a Georgia Clean Air Force representative available in the Tag Office the following hours:  Monday, 8-12 and 1-5; Wednesday, 8-11:30; and Friday, 8-12:30.  This representative processes Senior Waivers, Repair Waivers and Out of Area Extensions and can be reached by calling the Tag Office during those hours.  Emission information may also be obtained by contacting the Georgia Clean Air Force at 1-800-449-2471 or by visiting the Clean Air Force Web Site.
